Yet Another Food Blog
Of course I must blog about food. What else is there to blog about?
Last night Derek and I celebrated our 2-yr wedding anniversary and Derek let me pick any restaurant I wanted. So of course I referred to my modern day bible, the 2006 Zagat Survey, and I select Sushi Yasuda. Noted as the #1 Japanese restaurant in the NYC, yes they continue to beat out Nobu, I just had to highlight it in my Zagat. (I highlight all of the restaurants that I am lucky enough to go to, make notes, etc, and I transfer all of the information from year to year.) Derek made us a reservation, and I was looking fwd to dinner for like a month!
We arrive at the restaurant on 43rd, between 2-3Aves, and I am shocked by the decor. It was very simple, well lighted, and tiny. 20 tables at the most. From my past experience with going to highly noted restaurants they are usually over decorated, dark, and large. And I was surprised at the menu. It was simple, there were some special appetizers, and all of the sushi was bare bones. Which means that there weren't any "fancy" maki rolls that you see on so many menus. For a second I was disappointed, I thought that Zagat had led me wrong. How sad.
The waiter came over with the sushi ala carte sheet that the chef had highlighted with his recommendations for the night. This I like. I am far from a picky eater, and I think you do yourself a disservice when dining when you don't go with the chef's recommendation. So we selected the soft shell crab appetizer, edamane, 3 maki rolls (fatty tuna, eel, & trout), and 5 different kinds of sushi (2 pieces each of eel, red snapper, squid, tamago, & fluke.) Oh and we had a bottle of saki.
I have never had saki before, and I think I can definitely roll with some saki. We got a cold mild saki, and it was so good, it complimented everything we ordered. The soft shell crab was out of this world. Deep fried, with a dipping sauce to die for. The edamane was good. And the sushi and maki were all outstanding. There is something to be said about the quality of the food and the fact that it was not overdone at all. The fish spoke for itself. They didn't need avocado or tempura flakes, or whatever else is used to garnish sushi and maki.
To top it all off, the check was $99.86. Completely reasonable for what we ordered and the quality of the food.
I understand and completely agree with my beloved Zagat. Sushi Yasuda is the #1 Japanese restaurant I have ever been too. Better than Nobu and Bond St. They don't have to over decorate their restaurant or their food, the chef's quality selections can stand alone. The service was also attentive and knowledgable. Like my favorite steakhouse Peter Luger's, Sushi Yasuda is a one trick pony, and they do what they do the best.
